I was incredibly pleased to discover that Waitrose in Burgess Hill were now stocking waxed paper food bags, as well as the plastic kind. I'd been hoping they would, but up to now they hadn't appeared. And yet the out-of-town roadside fruiterers and butchers I go to (Jeremy's Two, just south of Cowfold) had been using paper bags for a long time. Now at last Waitrose had followed suit.
I gave out a whoop of joy, as did another lady nearby. We had bumped into each other in another aisle, and there was a definite meeting of minds on what we liked to buy, and our philosophy on going green. We couldn't - for instance - sail the Atlantic instead of flying across, but we could both use something much greener than plastic bags!
Waitrose were clearly being tentative, testing demand, and there was as yet only the one brand on sale, and only one size. But the product was exactly what I'd been looking for.
This product seemed very green indeed. Inside the box are sandwich-sized brown bags, slightly waxed to make them resistant to moisture. You can certainly pop cold meat slices in them, and I should think most things really, especially if they are going to be chilled or frozen. The bags don't seal, but of course you can fold the open end to close it, and if really necessary stick a peg on that fold to keep it shut. The brown paper is slightly translucent, so you can see what type of foodstuff is inside.
And it works. I shall buy more.
I think I could use paper bags like this for most things I might put in my fridge or freezer, bar liquids. I do get through a lot of small food bags, and it's been worrying me that they will mess up the environment. But these won't.
